RV Insurance Questions…and Some Answers!

If you are thinking about getting an RV, you should also be thinking about getting RV insurance and an extended warranty as well. These are optional, but if you really look at the investment that you are making it makes perfect sense to protect your investment with at least RV insurance. But, you may have questions about RV insurance that you would like answered before you make this purchase. Here are a few common questions and answers that might help you:

1. Can't I just get automobile insurance? The answer is yes and no. If you own a motorized RV, you can just get it insured with regular automobile insurance, but it will not cover the parts that are unique to RVs such as the awnings, stairs and slideouts. An RV insurance policy will cover those items as well as protecting you if someone gets injured while in your RV. If you have a towable RV, or a camper, your automobile insurance will not cover it but RV insurance will, and sometimes you can combine policies to cover both the tow vehicle and the RV to save money.

2. Where can I get RV insurance? Although you can get insurance for your RV through some general insurance companies, they probably will not have the variety and coverage options that a specialized RV insurance company will have. You can talk to your RV dealership for options, or you can go online and get a free quote within a few minutes. You simply enter the make, model, purchase price and year of the RV and it will give you an estimated quote. When you compare quotes from different companies make sure that you are getting the same level of RV insurance coverage with each so that the comparison is more accurate.

3. What kind of RV can I insure? You can get insurance for any type of recreational vehicle from a truck camper to a luxury diesel pusher motor home.

4. What kind of coverage should I get? Most insurers that cover RVs offer full coverage. This means that you will be covered by your RV insurance no matter what happens. You can also get total replacement coverage which will replace your new RV (5 years or less with original owner) with a brand new RV of the same quality, or on a used RV you will get the purchase price (agreed value coverage) any time your RV is a total loss.

5. Does it take long to apply? Not if you apply online. It is a simple application and it can be approved within a very short time so that you can get down to the business of enjoying your RV.

6. Is Insurance like an Extended Warranty? No. An extended warranty which can last from 1 to 7 years, covers things like appliances, mechanical repairs, etc, that are not covered by insurance. This is why you should consider getting both insurance and an extended warranty-it will give you even more peace of mind and freedom on the road.
